Natural Ways to Whiten Teeth at Home

If you think your teeth need whitening and you don’t have the time or money to spare for a visit to the dentist, we recommend that you try some of these natural ways to whiten teeth at home. These home remedies are safe and can certainly help you with tooth care and hygiene:

  • Brushing and flossing
The good old brushing and flossing method is one of the most efficient ways to keep your teeth look the best. You could opt for organic toothpaste if you are mindful of what you use. A toothpaste removes stains from the teeth, and flossing gets rid of bacteria and food particles that could potentially harden into plaque, eventually making the teeth look dull.
  • Oil pulling
Yet another time-tested method that is widely popular in Ayurvedic medicine, you can take a tablespoon of warm oil and swish it in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes. This process pulls out bacteria and other food particles. The oils that can be used include sesame oil, olive oil, and coconut oil. Coconut oil has been scientifically proven to prevent tooth decay as well, making it the best option. Ensure that you do the oil pulling on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning.
  • Baking soda
Being mildly abrasive, baking soda helps remove stains. Add some lemon juice and water to baking soda, pour the mixture into an ice cube tray, and freeze it. You could use this as a mouth wash. Alternatively, spread baking soda on an aluminum sheet and wrap it around your teeth. Allow it to stay for 10-15 minutes and then wash with warm water.
  • Hydrogen peroxide
An inexpensive over-the-counter bleaching agent, using hydrogen peroxide is a natural way to whiten teeth at home. It is known to change teeth color over a period of 2 weeks, but if you swish the chemical, it tends to irritate the gums. You could apply oil to soothe the irritation.
  • Malic acid
Apples, pineapples, and strawberries are known to contain malic acid that boosts saliva to wash away acids. There are quite a few organic toothpastes that contain bromelain, a compound found in pineapple. Using such toothpaste is a natural way to whiten teeth at home.
  • Apple cider vinegar
Although there haven’t been official studies on this, many users have stated that gargling with apple cider vinegar before brushing helps kill bacteria and also removes stains.
  • Be mindful of what you eat
Foods like dark berries and drinks like coffee, red wine, and soda are known to stain the teeth. Having said that, moderating the consumption of these foods and rinsing your mouth immediately after consuming them are effective ways to prevent staining the teeth. In addition, smoking and chewing tobacco should be avoided to protect the teeth from damage.
