9 Lesser-Known Symptoms of Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is also called the silent virus because many people who have this condition do not exhibit any symptoms for quite some time. Research shows that it can take six months for you to notice the symptoms of hepatitis C. People who have acute hepatitis C never experience the symptoms, and this is the case with up to 80% of the people. People with acute hepatitis C have an 85% higher risk of having chronic hepatitis C. Sometimes, people can have delayed symptoms, which can occur 10 years after the infection. The rarer symptoms of hepatitis C can occur during the chronic or acute stages.

Rashes
You might notice that you have raised rashes that have appeared out of nowhere. These rashes can be bumpy as well. This symptom of hepatitis C is quite rarely seen.

Weight loss
One of the rare hepatitis C symptoms is weight loss. This may be the case because of the effects of the hepatitis C infection. For example, if you experience other symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, and vomiting, you might not feel like eating. This can have an impact on how much you eat. Another reason is the effect of the infection on your liver. When your liver cannot function as effectively, some fats and proteins required for digestion of food are not produced. This can lead to malnutrition even when you eat normally. This can lead to weight loss.  

Pins and needles sensation
You might start to feel pins and needles sensation because of hepatitis C. This is one of the rarer symptoms of hepatitis C that you might not notice at the initial stages.

Vasculitis
One of the rare symptoms of hepatitis C is vasculitis. Vasculitis is when your blood vessels are inflamed. This does not always occur, and so is rare but is worth a mention. This condition can lead to a range of symptoms that you should look out for. For example, you will experience pain when you have this condition, especially joint pain. There might be an increase in blood clots due to this condition. Other symptoms include fatigue and fever. There are high risks of heart attacks and strokes due to vasculitis, although this is rare.

Itchy skin
Itchy skin is one of the rare symptoms of hepatitis C that many people ignore. You might experience excessive itching all over your body or certain areas of your body.

Cryoglobulinemia
Cryoglobulinemia occurs when many cryoglobulins become insoluble in cold temperatures. Cryoglobulins are unusual proteins found in the blood. This causes problems in blood circulation and can affect various parts of your body, such as liver, kidneys, joints, and skin. Symptoms of cryoglobulinemia can come and go. You might experience peripheral neuropathy, which is when your toe tips and fingers are numb. It can cause joint pain similar to arthritis symptoms. Another symptom is skin lesions.

Dry eyes and mouth
One of the rarer symptoms of hepatitis C is dry mouth and dry eyes. If you feel like you never had this problem but suddenly experience it, make sure you consult your doctor.  

Rheumatic disease
You might experience the symptoms of rheumatic disease, which might indicate you have hepatitis C. Rheumatic diseases include a range of disorders such as gout, osteoarthritis, and spondyloarthropathies. Rheumatic diseases cause pain, stiffness, and fatigue. It might even cause weight loss and fever. For example, you might experience pain and swelling in your joints. You might even experience muscle aches. This happens because your immune system is fighting the virus continuously.

Tingling sensation
You might experience strange sensations such as a tingling sensation. You might even experience a burning sensation as it is one of the rare symptoms of hepatitis C.
